How I Paint

I’ll admit it, I have a fun job. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love and love what I do. I realize that some folks don’t have this luxury and it’s not one that I take for granted. When the studio space became available about 9 years ago, I knew it was perfect for me.

My studio is located in The Factory at Franklin, an old stove factory that was converted to a shopping center, with wonderful boutiques, shops, and restaurants. The old barn wood walls and concrete floors provide a wonderful backdrop for an art studio.

Most of the time, I’m using acrylic paint on my paintings. Although I do use a brush from time to time, I love to paint with a palette knife, as it allows me so much freedom to move the paint around and blend the colors. I apply many layers of paint, and allow each layer to dry and show through the next layer. Oftentimes the finished piece is much different than what was in my mind to begin with, and usually better.

I typically paint on canvas, but I’ll paint on just about anything. I’ve painted on antique tin ceiling tiles, all types of wood, old rusty doors (my favorite!), you name it. Finishing the piece with a special UV protectant polyurethane seals it in and gives it a finished look. I am inspired by so many things, but probably the most by my surroundings. The landscape of middle Tennessee is simply stunning, and inspiration is definitely all around me!
